Primo Piano’s Berlin gallery is pleased to host the exhibition Funktionsstahl by Kaspar Swankey. Kaspar undertook an Architecture degree at London’s South Bank University which had a defining influence upon his work. He is now resident and working in Berlin.
Steel is the material chosen by Kaspar to achieve his works, seats, beds, wardrobes, etc. Everyday objects with a unique design which are real sculptures but with the added value of being functional. Sculptures for use, to be worn, to be sat upon, to hang clothes or which can illuminate the room as in the work ‘she’ candelabra. Sculptures to adorn as in the case of metal flowers. Sometimes surprisingly the objects/sculptures are light and appear suspended as in the case of the bed, a truncated inverted pyramid.
We can define Kaspar Swankey as an artist/blacksmith, as to realise his work he uses the classic old techniques of forging iron.
Sculptures which come out of the fire.
